Science in the Seventeenth Century
In seventeenth century England, and
throughout the world, the study of nature and how
nature affects man exploded. Man became able to
see the stars, with the help of the telescope,
and humans constantly attempted to unravel the
mysteries of the cosmos in order to discover a
new way in which to organize the universe. The
Scientific Method, which stressed careful
observation and strict discipline when recording
data, became widely used and appreciated thanks
to the writings of Francis Bacon.
In this particular web site two individual
sciences of the seventeenth century, astronomy
and biology, will be discussed in detail. A time
line of scientfic pursuits is also included to
illustrate how one landmark discovery can trigger
important research and inventions.

Science Museum, London
The Science Museum collects
artefacts to represent the development of science,
technology, industry and medicine from around
1700 to the present day. It organises these vast
holdings into a number of themed subject areas.
In addition the two sister museums at York (National Railway Museum) and Bradford (National Museum
of Photography, Film & Television) collect
material of the nature suggested by their titles.

(Michael
